On the Move: My Journey in Sports & Movement Medicine
Hello, and welcome to my corner of the world where movement, health, and passion intersect! My name is Wanjira Wachira, and I’m a general practitioner on a journey to specialize in sports and movement medicine. Along the way, I’ve come to believe that movement is more than just a way to stay fit; it’s a source of strength, joy, and well-being. Through this blog, I hope to share the unique power of movement medicine with you—and maybe inspire you to get a little more “on the move,” too!
A Name, a Meaning, and a Way of Life
I’d like to start with a fun fact about my middle name, Wanjira, which means “someone who is always on the move” or “someone on the road.” It’s no surprise that I’ve built my life around movement and staying active. Whether I’m exploring new trails, riding my motorcycle, or stepping outside for a workout, physical activity grounds me and fills me with energy and purpose. It’s almost as if my name paved the way for the life I live now—a life filled with movement, exploration, and a deep desire to keep going.
Movement has become my personal medicine. In the rare instances when I have to take a break from my routine, I feel that something essential is missing. Exercise is more than just a habit for me; it’s a foundation for my well-being. This passion drives me in my pursuit of sports and movement medicine, where my goal is simple: to help others discover the joy, peace, and strength that comes from moving our bodies.
Why I Believe in Movement as Medicine
Movement has a unique power to transform lives, not just physically but mentally and emotionally as well. Over the years, I’ve witnessed firsthand the changes that consistent, intentional movement can bring. I want to help others experience that same positive change.
In my practice, I’m often reminded of how impactful even the simplest movement routines can be. My mother’s story is a perfect example. She had been struggling with neck and shoulder pain for quite a while, and after seeing her discomfort, I created a few simple stretching exercises for her. To my surprise, she printed them out and pinned them on her bedroom wall as a daily reminder. Today, her flexibility has returned, and her pain has noticeably reduced. This small but powerful change reminded me of how healing movement can be, especially when made a part of daily life.
This experience underscored for me that wellness doesn’t need to be complicated or require fancy equipment. Sometimes, all it takes is a few moments each day to stretch, breathe, and honor our bodies. My hope is to bring this simplicity and accessibility into the lives of others, helping them find effective ways to incorporate movement into their routines.
Building a Community Around Movement
As I advance my expertise in sports and movement medicine, my vision is to build a community that celebrates movement in all its forms. From cycling to stretching, from weekend hikes to daily walks, there are countless ways to stay active. My goal is to make this journey inviting, accessible, and practical for everyone, regardless of where they are in their fitness journey.
One of my core beliefs is that movement is personal, and it should reflect what makes each of us feel alive and grounded. It’s not just about high-intensity workouts or achieving fitness goals—it’s about listening to our bodies, enjoying the journey, and finding peace in movement. I hope to empower people to try new forms of activity, build healthy habits, and experience the joy and resilience that come from being active.
