Your brain controls your life. Your thoughts, ideas, perspectives, decisions and attitudes all come from your thought process, both the conscious and subconscious. This make up your daily life. One of the best self care steps is to take care of your mental health. Here are some  steps that have proven to be helpful.

  • Being intentional with positive thoughts about yourself. It has been scientifically proven that we have more negative than positive thoughts. If we are not aware of this, negative thoughts can encompass our minds and end up ruining our peace. Your mind cannot tell the difference between a real and imagined experience. It will believe that which you constantly think about. That is why even in bad times, repeatedly having positive thoughts cheers us up. Try some positive thoughts when you wake up and have some that you repeat to yourself through out the day.
  • Read books, blog posts, poetry or listen to audio books. You have that one type of literature that tickles your mind. You can start with that. Expand your knowledge about different things. This helps grow your perspective about things and can help grow a new mind set about your life, events around you, people and even your approach to things. New perspectives enable the mind to evolve and this is good for your mental health.
  • Find time for that which makes you smile, makes you feel happy and energized. There is always time, all you have to do is prioritize. This enables the brain to relax, be reminded that it’s never that serious and that no mater what, life is beautiful.
  • Spend time with friends, family and loved ones. Good healthy human interaction is one of the best therapy for our minds. Being with loved ones and spending time with them is one of the best ways of taking care of your mental health. Create time to be at home, hang out, talk, sit in silence, laze around together, learn a new skill or do an activity together.
  • Get to know new people. Making new friends and meeting new people helps our minds realize how vast people’s experiences are. That life has its dark and light, that some people have overcome so much and are happy. That some are struggling though some issues but smiling their way through. It helps you realize that you are not alone in this journey of life.
  • Learn a new skill. An evolving brain is a healthy brain. Though it may be hard to learn a new skill, once you start learning you find you are pretty excited about it.We all have those things outside our work that we have always thought of trying. Get out of your head and try that new thing.
  • Practice vulnerability. Being real about who we are, what we are going through and how we feel is perfect therapy for our minds. There is no shame in expressing ourselves. It’s a process for most people, learning how to unmask and be real with others. Hiding our feelings and masking who we truly are is one of the main causes of poor mental health. Learn how to truly express yourself and be true to who you are.
  • Seek help when at a dark place. Everyone has something they struggle with. Find someone to talk to about things that are giving you a hard time. If you feel you are not ready to talk to someone, there are lots of books and writes that can help you think through a situation. The trick is to learn how to deal with issues as soon as they crop up to avoid accumulation.
  • Focus on the basics of your life. Might sound silly but the more settled you are with the daily life events, the better your mental health. Waking up on time for your day, spreading your bed, drinking enough water, having a healthy eating habit, taking a shower, dressing in what you feel good in… and so much more.Life is flexible and keeping a strict schedule is hard however, having those things that you do everyday goes a long way.
  • Sleep enough. This is how you keep your brain healthy and ready for life every single day. Again, there is time for everything, all you have to do id prioritize.
